Side Cut Metropark

33 (or so) of Springfield’s finest soccer athletes enjoyed marvelous weather this first day of July on their journey from Maumee’s Side Cart Metropark to Perrysburg’s Fort Meigs and back.

Silver Lake was the starting point, where they primed their muscles with a dynamic warmup and a series of runs up the sledding hill. The number of runs was determined by Coach Taylor and Coach Sloan taking turns rolling a die – they managed to roll a five and a six for a total of eleven – good going coaches!

The run itself (for those who actually ran) went pretty well – but we did lose two participants to illness. And of course there were a few wrong turns here and there along the way … including on the way back which I still haven’t wrapped my head around. The final capstone event will take place at the end of the month, just before tryouts.

Flying 15 Time Trials

We had 9 girls participate in our first Flying 15 Time Trials yesterday. The results broke down by class exactly, although we had no participation from the Junior class. The Seniors were the fastest and the Freshmen were the slowest. Keep in mind not all girls participated – whether because of injury, illness, studying, working, other sports, etc. We will hold these trials until everyone has a had a reasonable chance to participate.

Girls Tryouts Day 1, 7/31/2023

Top 6 finishers, “Kick for Distance”, in order: Faythe, Laney, Jenna, Cali, Emily, Jylian.

Top 6 finishers “Throw for Distance”, not in any particular order: Faythe, Jenna, Cali, Jylian, Harper, Aubrey.

Top 6 finishers “Illinois Agility Test”, average of both times, in order: Cali, Macy, Ada, Harper, Kaelee, Ella. The following ladies missed the top 6 by mere fractions of a second. (Could possibly attribute this to inefficiencies in the timer operator – me.) Laney missed by 0.03 seconds, Liv missed by 0.05, and Aubrey, Lola and Faythe all missed by 0.08.

Top 6 finishers “Beep Test”: Coach Taylor has that info and my phone is dead right now so I can’t call him. I know Ella, Macy, Lola, and Laney were very strong but that’s all I remember. I’ll post those results tomorrow.

Coach Taylor was in attendance.

Boys Summer S&C Day 22, Week 8 of 8

The summer strength & conditioning program has come to an end. The boys completed an 8.2 mile road course this morning in impressive fashion; their pace was good and their recovery was on point. They definitely took the challenge in stride, no pun intended. It’s getting to a point where it’s becoming a challenge for me to challenge them – which I think is a good thing.

I will continue to work with the boys throughout the season focusing on recovery and making sure their “edge” stays sharp.

Boys Summer S&C Day 21, Week 7 of 8

  1. Dynamic Warmup
  2. Hip Series
  3. Warmup Jog, Sideline to Sideline
  4. 300 yd Shuttle
  5. ABC Shuttle x4 (1800 yds in total)
  6. Jingle Jangle Shuttle x8 (1600 yds in total)
  7. Static Stretch
  8. Yoga – Strong Hips

300 yds + 1800 yds + 1600 yds = 3700 yds = over 2.1 MILES of sprinting today! Coach Sloan was in attendance.

Our next session, day 22, week 8 of 8., will be the Capstone of the summer conditioning program. The boys will start (and end) at the parking lot marked “F2” at the Fallen Timbers mall; just south and east of the JC Penney store.

Girls Summer S&C Day 20, Week 7 of 8

  1. Dynamic Warmup
  2. Hip Series
  3. Warmup Jog Sideline to Sideline
  4. 300 yd Shuttle
  5. “Indian Run” with heavy bag carried overhead around the 6
  6. Tempo Run for 18 minutes
  7. Small Sided Games – 6v6

Good to see some players we haven’t seen in a while! The “Indian Run” drill went well; it’s not easy keeping that 80 lb bag moving overhead without dropping it. Coach Taylor was in attendance.
